George Theophilou is a Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous gynaecological conditions.
Based in Leeds, George specialises in complex gynaecological oncology, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, combining advanced surgical expertise with compassionate, personalised care.

Journey
Born and raised in Paphos, Cyprus, George studied Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in Dublin, graduating in 2005. He subsequently moved to the UK, where he undertook specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology across several leading NHS hospitals, before focusing his career on gynaecological oncology.
He became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in 2012 and went on to complete advanced subspecialty training in Gynaecological Oncology at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. His training and clinical experience have developed around complex gynaecological cancer surgery, minimally invasive techniques and, increasingly, robotic surgery.
Alongside his clinical training, George developed a strong interest in research and surgical innovation. His academic work has included research in vibrational spectroscopy as well as clinical research in gynaecological oncology, contributing to peer-reviewed publications across areas including ovarian and endometrial cancer, surgical outcomes and emerging technologies in cancer care.
Today, George is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, based at St James’s University Hospital. His NHS practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancers, advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and complex and ultra-radical cancer surgery.
He is also Lead Clinician for the Central Gynaecological Oncology multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in Leeds, playing an active role in cancer care, surgical innovation and the continued development of specialist gynaecological oncology services.
Education and surgical training are also an important part of George’s work. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Education and has developed and delivers three cadaveric surgical courses: Minimal Access Surgery in Gynaecology for senior trainees, Robotic Surgery in Gynaecology for gynaecological oncology subspecialty trainees, and Advanced Ovarian Cancer Surgery for consultant gynaecological oncologists.

Alongside his clinical practice, George has a strong commitment to surgical education and the training of future specialists.
He holds a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Education and has developed and delivers three cadaveric surgical courses:
- Minimal Access Surgery in Gynaecology — for senior trainees
- Robotic Surgery in Gynaecology — for gynaecological oncology subspecialty trainees
- Advanced Ovarian Cancer Surgery — for gynaecological oncology consultants
George is also a proctor for Da Vinci Robotic Surgery, supporting and mentoring surgeons as they develop their skills in robotic surgical techniques. He also serves as faculty on several specialist surgical training courses, supporting the development of the next generation of gynaecological surgeons.

Research and innovation have been an important part of George’s career. His academic work has included research in vibrational spectroscopy, alongside his wider clinical interests in gynaecological oncology, complex surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
George has contributed to peer-reviewed research in gynaecological oncology and continues to maintain an active interest in advancing the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancers.

Medicine
Away from medicine, George enjoys kitesurfing and martial arts, as well as playing the piano. He also holds a private pilot’s licence and enjoys flying whenever he gets the opportunity.
